The International School of Kigali is an independent, parent-owned, non-profit, educational institution offering a college preparatory program. ISK serves students in pre-school though grade 12. ISK is an inclusive institution that welcomes all on a non-discriminatory basis, regardless of race creed, religion, national origin, gender, ethnic background, or philosophy. The vision of ISK is to provide a safe environment in which all students achieve high academic success, demonstrate critical thinking skills and become responsible global citizens prepared for their next stage of life.
The International School of Kigali was formed by a group of parents with a common desire to establish an international school of excellence that would assist students and families residing in Kigali by delivering the highest standards of international education. Classes began on September 14, 2009 and ISK was officially born. Both inside and outside of Rwanda, ISK is quickly becoming recognized as an International School of the highest standards.
The School is governed by a 5-member Board of Trustees, with four members elected from the International School of Kigali Association, and one member appointed by the US Ambassador to Rwanda. The Director of the School sits as an Ex-officio member of the Board. Membership in the Association is automatically conferred on the parents or guardians of the students enrolled in ISK.
Students at ISK begin their day at 8:00am and are dismissed at 3:15pm, 5 days a week, for 180 school days per academic year. Students eat lunch on campus each day.
The International School of Kigali is comprised a very diverse student body, representing 28 different nationalities. Approximately 25% are Americans, 20% are Dutch, while Rwandans comprise about 12% of the student body. The remaining students are from around the world, making ISK a truly International School.
In the 2009-2010 school year, there are 17 full-time faculty members, including 11 US citizens, 2 citizens of the UK, 1 Kenyan, 1 Ugandan, 1 Sri Lankan, and 1 Rwandan. Every member of the ISK team has been carefully selected, based on the appropriate certifications, experience, and personal qualities that create the positive, professional learning environment that is ISK.
ISK is located in a quiet, residential neighborhood of Kigali, the capital of Rwanda. The facility consists of 15 classrooms, with space for a library, science lab, art room, and administrative offices. The school facility is also comprised of a covered cafeteria, open green space, and a partial basketball court.
ISK follows and American-based curriculum, enhanced with international best practices. It is the goal of the ISK program to prepare students to enter any university of their choice. The ISK curriculum is an authentic program designed to meet the unique contest of its students. All instruction is delivered in English, although all students, K-12, are offered French as a foreign language. Additional classes offered include Art, P.E., Drama, Photography, Global Issues, and Debate. Information Technology skills are integrated into core instruction. The High School program offers a challenging course of study, focusing on developing the knowledge and skills that will create the leaders of tomorrow. The Primary and Middle School Programs build on students’ individual strengths, while developing their learning skills and processes in a nurturing, positive environment. ISK is the only school in Rwanda to be recognized as a member in the Association of International Schools in Africa (AISA) and has initiated the accreditation process with both the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the Middle States Association (MSA) during its inaugural year. ISK is following an ambitious pace to deliver the highest quality education available.
